The Importance of Preventing Workplace Bullying and Harassment for Thriving Organizations

Workplace bullying and harassment are systemic issues that can harm employee well-being and hinder organizational success. Addressing these problems is critical not only for individual health but also for productivity and morale. Conduct Change's 2019 campaign has been at the forefront of advocating for anti-bullying laws, pushing for legislative reforms that protect employees and promote healthier work environments.

Building the Movement

Launched in November 2019, Nicki Eyre's campaign started by raising awareness about workplace bullying, and by July 2020, an Advisory Board was established to plan for legislative changes. The momentum grew with the first United Against Workplace Bullying Conference in November 2020, where experts discussed the need for new legislation. This led to the creation of a Legislative Working Group in January 2021, aiming to close gaps in current laws.

Legislative Progress

In 2022, the campaign rebranded as "Stop Hurt at Work," focusing on all forms of workplace harm. A draft Bill was shared with MP Rachael Maskell in September 2022, marking a shift towards legislative action. By July 2023, the Bullying and Respect at Work Bill was introduced in Parliament, though the Second Reading was delayed. However, the election of the Labour Government in 2024 and the new Employment Rights Bill offer hope for future progress.

The Business Case for Prevention

Preventing workplace bullying and harassment is a moral and strategic imperative for organizations. A safe, respectful workplace boosts employee satisfaction, productivity, and retention. Failure to address these issues can lead to turnover, absenteeism, and reputational damage. On the other hand, proactive measures foster innovation and attract top talent.

Organizations that invest in preventing bullying not only protect their employees but also set the stage for long-term growth and success. Prevention is more than a legal obligation - it's essential for thriving, empowered workplaces.
